Dungeon Settlers Combat vs Management Difficulty

Two sliders. Five tiers each. Normal is the teaching lane; Hard is closer to the old intended curve.

Difficulty Settings

Dungeon Settlers exposes two difficulty axes with the same five names: Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, Devastation (some UI text says Downfall). They do not have to match. A player who loves combat puzzles but hates spreadsheet kitchens can run Hard combat / Easy management. That split was added after supporter surveys said one slider punished both halves of the hybrid.

This page is a lookup table for Early Access. Pair it with mood and settlement.

Combat axis

Combat difficulty scales monster health and damage up to about ×1.5 on Devastation and shortens respawns from 1,200 minutes down toward 600. It also adds more negative environmental modifiers on a region (counts climb as you go up the ladder). Elites like the Red Monster Rat keep their pattern; they simply hit harder and live longer.

If packs feel spongy, this is the slider. If you never have time to loot because respawns are instant, this is also the slider.

Management axis (the one people miss)

Approximate multipliers from game constants (Easy → Devastation):

  • Drop rate: 1 / 1 / 1 / 0.67 / 0.34
  • Crafting ingredients: 0.34 / 0.67 / 1 / 1 / 1
  • Construction materials: 0.34 / 0.67 / 1 / 1 / 1
  • Research workload: 0.34 / 0.67 / 1 / 1.33 / 1.66

Easy management is a resource sandbox. Devastation management is a famine: half-ish drops, full material costs, 1.66× research. That is why a “I copied an S-tier Elf” save still stalls — the lab is on 1.66× and the kitchen is on 0.34× loot.

Treatment expectation mood (levels 1–5)

Easy: +9, +6, +2, −2, −5
Normal: +7, +4, 0, −4, −7
Harder rows keep dropping. Veterans demand better rooms and food. If you pray everyone to 5 and never upgrade bedrooms, management difficulty becomes the real boss. Dungeon Stay penalties also scale with this axis — long expeditions hurt more on Hard+.

  • New to colony sims: Easy / Easy, then bump combat to Normal after the rat.
  • Hybrid fans (default): Normal / Normal. This wiki’s comps assume that.
  • RimWorld veterans: Hard combat / Normal management.
  • Masochists: Devastation / Devastation. Do not do this on your only save. Cloud is not a time machine for pride.

The studio shifted the intended experience toward Hard after playtests. Reading “hardcore strategy” on Steam and then picking Devastation on night one is how people write one-hour negative reviews.

Changing difficulty mid-campaign

If the UI allows a change, expect mood tables and costs to retarget. If it does not, start a new clan — EA is for that. Do not hex-edit a save unless you like soft locks.

When a guide says a fight is fair, it means Normal combat, Bone/Carapace gear, pause used. Raise combat and you owe extra inscriptions and better party comps.

Environment modifiers and why Hard feels “unfair”

Higher combat tiers add more negative region modifiers (the constants tables count extra minus effects as you climb). A Veil of Silence run on Easy might be almost weather-neutral. The same map on Very Hard can stack vision or stat-weakens on top of fatter rats. That is not a bug in depletion; it is the combat axis doing extra homework. If a floor feels cursed after a slider change, read the region modifier icons before you reroll the clan.

Drop-rate cuts on Very Hard and Devastation management also make Bone/Carapace slower to craft. The settlement forge still needs the same recipes; you simply feed it less loot per hour. Compensate with stricter rotation (never touch depletion 1 unless you must) and shorter trips so Dungeon Stay does not pile on the same week you are already hungry.

A note on “intended Hard”

Playtest surveys said old Normal was already the cruel management game. The studio moved the intended curve toward Hard and left Normal as onboarding. Guides on this wiki still teach Normal/Normal so new buyers can finish Crawling Doom. Veterans who came from RimWorld should try Hard combat once the rat is dead, not at the wagon. Devastation is a badge, not a tutorial.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I mix Easy management with Hard combat?

Yes. The axes are separate. That mix is a valid way to learn tactics without a famine.

Why is research so slow on my save?

Check the management slider (up to 1.66× workload), lab room quality, and whether a Lizardman is on the bench.

Does Devastation change the Red Monster Rat’s pattern?

HP and damage scale; Bloody Scratch and Rat Swarm still exist. Gear up harder or lower the combat axis.

What did playtesters complain about?

A single slider made management feel cruel on the old Normal. The split and the “intended = Hard” shift are the response.
