Dungeon Settlers Settlers, Stats, and Growth
People are the save file. Understand talents before you spend a mana stone.
Dungeon Settlers does not field disposable squads. Each settler has six major stats, a talent rating per stat, racial and background traits, optional inscriptions, equipment, mood, stress, and a permadeath flag. This hub points at the systems behind the recruiting screen and the race tier list.
Child pages:
- Stats and talents — Strength through Perception, Poor–Genius growth, offerings.
- Traits and inscriptions — backgrounds, Gloom, Perfection, Retry on level-up.
- Leveling — XP table, mana stone grades, the wall after level 5, building cap 5, unit cap 12.
The short model
Talents decide how many points a stat gains per prayer. Offerings multiply that gain and the stone cost. Major stats then feed derived numbers (physical attack, max weight, health, energy, magic attack, speed, crit). You cannot respec talents. You can choose inscriptions at each prayer from five options — use Retry rather than locking a sad Common.
Race is a prior: Human XP and cooking, Lizardman guard work, Elf lab and bow. Backgrounds punch holes (claustrophobia vs mining). Inscriptions are the long-run spice, including traps like Gloom’s Mood −3. None of this matters if beds and food are missing; a Genius corpse is a lore entry.
Who belongs in the dungeon
Expedition slots are four. Send people whose trees match weapon ranks and whose durability is not a rounding error. Keep researchers and unique talent rolls at camp unless the party comp truly needs them. The combat guide is the field manual; this hub is the character sheet.
Clan rank and population
Contribution points raise clan rank. Rank 2 is the live milestone: +population, better candidates, Elf unlock. Higher ranks are defined in data and mostly locked. Do not stall your settlement waiting for a rank-7 fantasy.
When a settler dies
They stay dead. Hire from the next 480-minute refresh. Do not try to clone the dead tree onto a recruit with opposite talents. Update the party and the kitchen together so diet tags still match.
For first-week bodies, you only need one guard, one cook, and two people who can hold a weapon without fainting. Everything else is a luxury the beginner guide told you to postpone until after the Red Monster Rat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the level cap?
Units cap at 12. Buildings cap at 5. Practical combat leveling slows after 5 because Greater and Supreme mana stones are scarce.
Can I change a settler’s talents later?
No. Talents are rolled at generation. Inscription of Perfection can bump every talent one tier, capped at Genius.
Should labourers go on expeditions?
Only if you accept permadeath on that work bonus. Most cooks and researchers should stay in camp.
