Dungeon Settlers Keep Mood Above Zero

Stress kills without a monster. Kitchens, beds, and diets are combat stats.

Mood and Food

Every settler has a Mood stat (UI scale tops out at 30). Mood above 0 drains Stress. Mood below 0 fills Stress. When Stress maxes, the unit suffers a Mental Break and Stress resets. If Stress maxes again during that break, the unit dies instantly. That is not flavor text. It is a second permadeath channel next to dungeon combat. This page is how you refuse that death. Pair it with the settlement guide and recruiting.

A squad whose average mood stays below −3 for a stretch can trigger Growing Discontent, a morale-crisis event. HUD alerts exist for a reason; do not mute them because they clash with your pixel aesthetic.

Meal classes and racial diets

Edibles carry a class: vegetarian (about 13 items), carnivore (about 10), omnivore (2), plus misc. Racial rules read that class:

  • Elves gain Carnal Guilt (Mood −2) from carnivore food and skip the usual penalty for an all-vegetarian diet.
  • Lizardmen gain Plant Rage (Mood −2) from vegetarian food and skip the all-meat penalty.
  • Humans eat anything. Their quirk is Growth Fatigue (Mood −2) while the XP bar sits at maximum, so level them instead of parking a full bar overnight.

Cooked dishes also carry a mood value. Some Guild tasks literally ask you to stockpile food with Mood 1+, 2+, or 3+. Where you eat matters: a dining room stretches the buff; the floor barely bothers. If you run a mixed roster, you need two cook lines or you are choosing a mood tax on purpose. The race tier list assumes you know this before you call Elves “S-tier researchers.”

Sleep ladder

Ground sleep, bed, bedroom: comfort windows on the order of 135 / 1,080 / 2,160 seconds. A bedroom is not a luxury skin; it is a triple-length buff. Build it in the first two days (getting started). Veterans at higher levels expect even better treatment — see the table below and the difficulty page.

Treatment expectations by level

Management difficulty changes the mood a unit “contributes” as they level. On Normal management, the baseline from level 1 to 5 is roughly +7, +4, 0, −4, −7. Easy is kinder (+9 down to −5). Harder management rows go harsher. Translation: a level 5 hero in a starter shack is a mood hole. Upgrade rooms as you pray levels, or stop leveling the ungrateful.

Expeditions drain mood

Each in-game day underground steps up Dungeon Stay. Safe floors help. Night does not. Plan trip length on the expeditions page. A perfect combat pull still fails if the archer Mental Breaks mid-pack.

Recreation

Dice Play Table, Dart Play Board, and Card Play Table each grant a mood bonus per ~40-minute session. Playing the same game over and over applies Bored. Rotate. Recreation patches holes; it does not replace food or beds.

Gear and inscriptions that touch mood

  • Flower Necklace — Mood +2 while worn.
  • Echo Flower Ring — Mood +2 and a trickle of health regen.
  • Forgotten Idol — more damage as mood falls. A deliberate misery build. Do not mix this with a fragile roster.
  • Inscription of Gloom (Rare) — +20% to all six major stats, permanent Mood −3. Excellent on a unit whose needs you can meet; a suicide note on a neglected one. Full inscription advice sits on traits and inscriptions.

Practical kitchen plan

  1. Identify the roster’s diet tags after recruiting.
  2. Farm or hunt for both vegetable and meat lines if mixed.
  3. Cook in a dining room, not beside the portal.
  4. Keep a Mood 2+ dish for Guild tasks and for veterans.
  5. Never let Human XP sit full overnight.
  6. If average mood is negative, cancel the next deep expedition and fix beds first.

Mood is the management layer the dungeon crawler hides behind pixel rats. Treat it with the same pause discipline you use in a named fight.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What kills a settler when no monster is around?

A second Stress cap during an active Mental Break. Keep Mood at or above 0 with food, beds, and shorter dungeon stays.

Can Elves and Lizardmen share a kitchen?

Yes, if you cook both vegetarian and carnivore dishes. One menu means a permanent −2 on half the roster.

Is Inscription of Gloom worth it?

Yes on a well-housed veteran, no on a dirt-sleeping recruit. The +20% stats are real; so is Mood −3.

Why is my high-level settler always unhappy?

Treatment expectations rise with level. Upgrade bedrooms and food, or check the difficulty management row.
