Items and Resources Guide

Dungeon Settlers runs on a crafting economy. Materials from the dungeon become equipment at the settlement forge. The loop is simple: floor → material → craft → equip → deeper floor. This guide is the reference for what drops, what it builds, and when to sell instead of craft.

Common dungeon drops

Wood — construction, arrows, torches. Common on every floor. Stockpile 200+ for beds, workstations, and arrow crafting.

Grass / fibers — cloth production. Needed for the first armor tier and some crafting recipes.

Herbs — healing items, cooking ingredients, alchemy. Auto-pickup helps. Some Guild tasks ask for specific herb types.

Bones — Bone equipment tier. Shields, swords, helmets from Bone are the first meaningful upgrade over Cloth. Drop from animal-type enemies.

Carapace — Carapace equipment tier. Armor and weapons from carapace rival Bone and may have different stat profiles. Drop from insect or shell-type enemies.

Clay — pottery, some furniture, crafting. Floor 3+ for meaningful amounts. Farm Acid Slogels and Predatory Frogs early, use merchants for bulk.

Gemstones — high-value trade goods. Sell to merchants or use for advanced crafting when recipes unlock.

Mandrake — cooking ingredient, alchemy. Found on deeper floors. Do not skip if you see it; the kitchen and the Guild both want it.

Forbidden fruit — cooking with mood bonuses. Deep floor or event room drop. Save for veterans or Guild tasks.

Equipment tiers

Cloth — starter tier. Crafted from fibers at the Basic Workstation. Better than nothing; inadequate against elites.

Bone — first real tier. Requires Bone materials from the dungeon. Crafted at the Forge. Suitable for the Red Monster Rat fight.

Carapace — parallel tier to Bone. Different stat profiles. Mix based on what your settlers need.

Metal — later tier, depends on region 2 or later metal drops. Higher stats than Bone or Carapace.

What to keep vs sell

Keep: Wood (200+), bones (50+), carapace (30+), herbs (20+), clay (50+), mandrake (5+), any material for the next equipment tier you are researching.

Sell: Gemstones if gold is tight, duplicate herbs beyond kitchen needs, junk that sells for 50+ gold and has no crafting use.

Crafting priority

  1. Cloth armor and arrows (day 1–2) — getting started.
  2. Bone or Carapace gear for the guard and primary striker — before the Red Monster Rat.
  3. Improved arrows (bone, metal) — when recipes unlock.
  4. Replacement gear as durability drops — repair is cheaper than craft.

Resource management tips

Auto-pickup is your friend. Manual tagging is how you leave a gemstone vein on floor 4 and remember it at camp.

Track depletion. A depleted floor loses 50% on all drops. If you are farming Clay on floor 3 and it hits 0, move floors instead of waiting.

Storage matters. Barrels for arrows, racks for armor, stockpiles near the portal. A full inventory means no room for the loot you came for.

Expedition supply items

Ointments — heal small amounts, craft from herbs. Pack 3–5 per run.

Aid kits — larger heal, requires more materials. For long runs or elite fights.

Camping kits — allow safe overnight stays on safe floors. Use when the next portal is far and mood is still positive.

Rations — expedition food. Match racial diets. See mood and food.

Rations and camping kits are the difference between a planned 3-day run and a desperate scramble home at night.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the first material I should stockpile?

Wood (200+) and bones (50+) for the Bone equipment tier. Cloth comes from fibers early; Bone comes from dungeon kills.

Should I sell gemstones or craft with them?

Sell if gold is tight. Keep if you are close to a crafting unlock that needs them.

How do I get Clay early?

When should I switch from Bone to Carapace gear?

When you have enough carapace materials to equip the party. They are parallel tiers; mix based on what drops.
