Dungeon Settlers Research Is a Building and a Job
Idle stations waste more campaigns than permadeath. Learn the book economy before you idle the lab.
Research in Dungeon Settlers is a production chain. You need a Research Station, a settler with the job, research books from the dungeon, and time. Skipping any link leaves you staring at a locked recipe you cannot craft. This guide is the loop layer — read it with settlement and leveling so you know why an Elf in a fantastic lab is not the same as a Lizardman in a hallway.
The research chain
Research Station is the building. It holds one active project. The UI shows a queue of locked recipes sorted by prerequisites. A book consumed as a catalyst advances the current project by a chunk; the exact chunk depends on the recipe complexity and the research speed stat. Idle the station and you idle the campaign — the getting started checklist starts research at Main6 for a reason.
Research books drop from dungeon floors, event rooms, and named enemies. They are not infinite. A depleted region is also a depleted book supply. Track what you consumed before you promise a follow-up run.
Research speed comes from the assigned settler’s Intelligence and their room quality multiplier. A Genius Intelligence researcher in a fantastic Research Lab moves two to four times faster than a Moderate Intelligence settler in a storage corridor.
Room quality and the multiplier
The Research Lab (or the room housing the Research Station) applies a quality multiplier:
- Poor — roughly +30% research speed
- Fair — roughly +60%
- Normal — roughly +90%
- Good — roughly +120%
- Fantastic — roughly +150%
- Luxurious — roughly +180–210%
A Fantastic or Luxurious lab is not cosmetic. It is the difference between a 40-hour project and a 20-hour project. Place the Research Station in an enclosed, well-furnished room. See settlement for room classification rules.
What to unlock first
Priority unlock order (Early Access, region 1–2 content):
- Basic Workstation recipes — cloth, arrows, tools. Already started in getting started.
- Bone or Carapace equipment — before the Red Monster Rat. Cloth fails against 144 physical attack.
- Improved beds and bedroom furniture — mood multiplier, directly affects mood and food.
- Better cooking appliances — vegetable and meat lines for mixed rosters.
- Advanced ammo and repair kits — expedition sustainability.
- Region 2 relevant recipes — after you clear the first region or confirm the gate.
Do not unlock a vanity statue recipe while your guard wears cloth into Festering Burrow.
Who should research
Elves get a research racial bonus and have Intelligence aptitude. Put them in the lab when clan rank 2 unlocks them.
Lizardmen take a research penalty. They belong on mining, taming, and guard duty.
Humans are flexible. A Human with Outstanding or Exceptional Intelligence can sit in the lab; their XP bonus (Growth Fatigue note applies) keeps the settler relevant.
Check stats and talents for the Intelligence multiplier and recruiting for how to find high-Intelligence candidates.
Book economy and depletion
Books are a dungeon resource, not a camp resource. When a floor is depleted, book drops fall with everything else (–50% to the whole region). Rotate floors. Do not grind one corridor hoping for a research drop.
Carry books back like ammo. Auto-pickup helps. If you leave a book on the floor and the floor depletes before you return, that project waits longer than it should.
When research stalls
- Station idle? Assign a researcher.
- No books? Run a short expedition and pick up every book you see.
- Low room quality? Improve the lab room or move the station.
- Researcher has poor Intelligence? Retrain or reassign.
- Wrong race in the lab? Lizardman penalty is real.
Research is the settlement’s acceleration pedal. A running lab means the weapons and inscriptions you read about actually exist in your campaign.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why is research so slow?
Check the researcher’s Intelligence, the lab room quality, and whether books are available. A Lizardman in a hallway is three problems.
Where do research books come from?
Dungeon floors, event rooms, and named enemies. Depleted regions also reduce book drops.
Should I build a dedicated research room?
Yes. Room quality multiplies research speed significantly. A Fantastic or Luxurious lab is worth the walls.
Who is best for research?
Elves (research bonus, Intelligence aptitude) from clan rank 2. High-Intelligence Humans are the next best option.
