Dungeon Settlers Questions Every Colonist Asks

Early Access answers, beginner confusion, and the most common tactical myths — resolved.

FAQ

This FAQ consolidates the questions the wiki team sees most on Discord, Steam discussions, and the Search Console. It is not a strategy guide — for detailed mechanics start with getting started, colony, or combat.

Early Access and Game Scope

Q: Is Dungeon Settlers finished?

No. The September 2026 launch is Early Access. Two story regions (Veil of Silence, Festering Burrow) are end-to-end complete. The Infinite Abyss is a separate mode, marked as partly implemented. Full release is targeted for around 2028 with regions 3–6, more races, and Steam Workshop support.

Q: Can I play with friends?

No. Dungeon Settlers is solo. There is no co-op, multiplayer, or split-screen mode.

Q: What platforms are supported?

Windows and macOS at launch. Steam Deck is Playable (not Verified) — see the system requirements page for caveats on text size and default resolution.

Q: How long is Early Access?

CanOpener estimates roughly two years. Full release targets 2028 with additional regions, races, events, weapons, and mod support.

Colony and Base Building

Q: What should I build first?

Priority order: Bedroom (beds for morale), Dining Room (meals at table for a longer morale buff), Basic Workstation (tools, cloth, ammunition), then the Forge. The settlement guide has the full production spine.

Q: Do I need a bedroom on day one?

Yes. Sleeping on the ground gives a short comfort buff. A bed in an enclosed room significantly extends sleep duration. Without beds, morale collapses before your first elite encounter.

Q: How do I get Clay?

Floor 3+ has significant Clay deposits. Farm Acid Slogels and Predator Frogs, or buy in bulk from merchants. The items and resources guide covers early farming locations.

Q: Can I craft while an expedition is underground?

Yes. Workstations remain active. Plan your craft queue so equipment is ready when groups return, not after they need it.

Q: Why is research so slow?

Three causes: inactive research station, low room quality, or a Lizardman at the bench (they have a research penalty). Assign an Elf or high-Intelligence settler and build a dedicated research room with good furniture.

Combat and Tactics

Q: Is combat turn-based?

No. It is real-time with pause. Pause is the intended tactical tool, not an accessibility feature. Bind pause to a key before your first dungeon run.

Q: Can dead colonists be revived?

No. Permadeath is a core design rule. Keep a spare recruit at camp and do not send your only high-talent colonist on risky expeditions.

Q: Do I need a healer?

There is no dedicated healer class. Use Water or Nature magic for combat healing, bring ointments and first aid kits, and win fights faster with a shield user so you do not need healing throughput.

Q: Does Bleeding work on bosses?

No. Both the Giant Stone Golem and Chain Knight Sentinel are immune to Bleeding. Use direct physical or magic damage only.

Q: How do I beat the Red Monster Rat?

Spread your group so a swarm does not pin everyone in one spot. Send a shield user in first, focus summoned rats when they threaten the back line, and use healing before your frontliner reaches lethal range. The full strategy is in the boss guide.

Q: What is the best party composition?

A shield user, a physical striker (sword or greatsword), a ranged attacker (bow), and a magic user (fire for damage, water or nature for utility). See the party builds guide for specific compositions.

Recruiting and Colonists

Q: Why do I only see Human recruits?

Race weight: Human 100, Lizardman ~35, Elf 25 (after clan rank 2). The bias is intentional. Elves require clan rank 2 to appear. See the recruiting guide.

Q: Can I recruit Dwarves?

No. Dwarf, White Demon, Tal and Lycan exist in data with recruitment weight 0. They are not available in the current Early Access build.

Q: Should I reroll inscription choices?

Yes. Reroll at the prayer screen on level-up until you see an option matching the colonist’s role. Common Inscriptions are rarely worth it.

Progression and Difficulty

Q: When should I move from Veil of Silence to Festering Burrow?

After clearing floor 10 of Veil of Silence and defeating the Giant Stone Golem. Recommended group level: 7+ with Bone or Carapace equipment on all members.

Q: What is the recommended level for Festering Burrow?

Level 7 minimum for entry floors, Level 10+ for deep Burrow content. Going undergeared results in frequent wipes and permadeath.

Q: Does difficulty affect loot?

Difficulty settings affect enemy HP and damage, not loot quality. See the difficulty guide for scaling details.

Q: What happens when a floor is depleted?

A depleted floor loses 50% on all drops. Move to a new floor rather than farming a depleted floor. The dungeon expeditions guide explains the depletion mechanics.

Resources and Economy

Q: What is the most important crafting material early?

Bone — it crafts Bone Arrows for your archer and Carapace Armor for your tank. Prioritize expeditions that bring bone drops.

Q: Should I sell or craft with gems?

Sell if gold is tight. Keep if you are close to a crafting unlock that needs them.

Q: How do I earn gold?

Sell duplicate resources, excess herbs, and useless loot to merchants. Merchants appear in dungeon floors and at the colony. The gold guide covers merchant strategies.

Technical and Performance

Q: The UI is hard to read on Steam Deck.

Manually set the native resolution in display settings — the game does not always select it by default. Increase UI scaling in game settings. Valve rates it Playable, not Verified.

Q: Can I use a controller?

Keyboard and mouse are the primary controls. Controller support is not confirmed for Early Access.

Q: Does the game save automatically?

Steam Cloud is enabled. For pause-heavy colony games, manually backing up the save folder before installing beta branches is still recommended.

Community and Support

Q: Where do I report bugs?

Use the official Discord server (link from the Steam community hub). CanOpener is active on Discord during Early Access.

Q: Are there mods?

Not yet. Steam Workshop is planned for late Early Access or full release. Anyone selling Dungeon Settlers scripts is in the wrong genre — this is a Steam strategy game.

Q: Is there a subreddit?

No official subreddit as of September 2026. The active community is on Steam Discussions and the official Discord server.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is the game co-op?

No. Dungeon Settlers is strictly solo. There is no multiplayer mode.

How do I progress faster?

Manage morale (beds, meals at table, recreation), assign the right colonists to the right jobs (Elf for research, Lizardman for mining), and keep a regular expedition routine.

What do I do if a colonist dies?

Death is permanent. Keep a replacement recruit at camp. Adjust your tactics to avoid reproducing the problem — send a shield user and do not neglect morale.
